* use appropriate language and style for the situation and the audience and take into account the ideas and interests expressed by the person receiving the message

Exemplars

Students will:

-practice using standard written and oral English

Comments

This software creatively adds interest to a subject that is often difficult to motivate through traditional classroom instruction. Although it is "advertised" as useful in grades 4-adult, both ranges may be a stretch (I've suggested grades 7-10). It is interdisciplinary in that the four levels of grammar games concern ecology. Pretest scores "assign" students to their appropriate beginning levels in areas such as sentence structure, subject-verb agreement, usage and punctuation.

Comments

Language Toolkit Reader is an interactive multimedia program for language learning. It features the integrated use of text, illustrations, sound, QuickTime movies, vocabulary, exercises based on text and sound, and notes on grammar. You use the program to access lessons which are prepared separately. A teacher can prepare multimedia lessons for any target language by using the companion program 'Language Toolkit Writer'. Associated programs 'Verbs & Nouns' and 'V&N Lookup' give access to additional support in the way of dictionaries, and offer the opportunity for further practice of inflection and translation at the level of single words.

Having used and previewed several SAT/ACT programs, this is the best I've seen. It provides a test introduction, menu of topics and corresponding lessons, a study plan option, college information (students view average test scores from institutions across the nation), reference tools and a web link. There is a "Word Rally" feature that entertainingly simulates a race car trip that students proceed on by correctly identifying vocabulary. A bank of tests (diagnostic and practice varieties) is also included on the CD.
